This monumental journey starts in co-director Nanfu Wang’s rural hometown, with her own family, before extending across the entire nation in consideration of China’s “one child policy” and its enforcement through propaganda and unsettling government policies. With her infant son accompanying her, Wang’s bravery and concern for the soul of a nation takes her across the ocean back to America, her adopted home, in a reckoning of personal responsibility and the unexpected consequences of global adoption.
