CHINA LOVE

Directed by Olivia Martin-McGuire

In contemporary China it is customary for engaged couples to spend a small fortune on glamourous portraits, taken months before weddings. Seen as the ultimate display of romance and status, this billion-dollar industry is a stark shift from prior generations where weddings were functional, austere events overshadowed by the Cultural Revolution. Caught between traditions of the past and the bold excess of the future, we follow budding couples through a labyrinth of sound stages, including underwater sets and pre-fabricated castles, as they search for the perfect photo. This colorful film is the ultimate fantasy ride, with lingering class implications for a country tilting towards capitalism run amok.
